From the floor to the certificate

Four layers. Do not skip a layer because it looks basic. The exam writes Apply and Analyze items on top of Remember items. If the definition is fuzzy, the word problem beats you.

Layer 1 — Language and units

You can convert inches to millimeters in your head, reduce a fraction, and say what a “characteristic” is. You know accuracy is not precision. You know a specification is not a measurement.

Layer 2 — Tools and drawings

You can choose between a 0–1" mic and a CMM (coordinate measuring machine). You can set a part up on a surface plate from the datum structure. You can read a feature control frame and compute bonus tolerance when the hole goes to LMC (least material condition).

Layer 3 — Decision systems

You can pick a sampling plan, grade a defect critical / major / minor, write up a nonconformance, and know what the MRB (material review board) is allowed to do. You can tell a control-chart run from common-cause noise.

Layer 4 — Improvement literacy

You are not running the kaizen, but you can name DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control), walk a 5-Why, and explain why a CAPA (corrective and preventive action) is not just a band-aid. Inspectors who understand prevention write better inspection plans.
